The New York State Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law encourages food donations and composting or reuse of organic waste – also known as food scraps. This law, which went into effect on January 1, 2022, has had a major impact on the way we think about food waste, as well as on businesses who need to dispose of their food scraps. Under the law, these businesses must donate all excess edible food, and recycle all remaining food scraps if they’re within 25 miles of an “organics recycler” (such as a composting facility).
